Makenna Robery Therapy
Anxiety. Eating Disorders. Life Transitions.
Improving your relationships with food, your body, your emotions, and the people in your life can seem overwhelming. This is especially true if you're used to feeling like your needs and emotions make you a "burden" to others. With the right tools and support, it is absolutely achievable. There is hope. You're not alone. Let's start writing the next chapter of your story.
About Me
I'm a Bay Area native, Giants enthusiast, and sucker for a good donut. In 2014 I earned my Bachelors degree in Psychology from Biola University, followed by a Masters in Marital and Family Therapy (emphasis in Medical Family Therapy) from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2016.
Since then, I spent a year and a half working for an IOP/PHP eating disorder treatment program which reinforced my passion for the Health at Every Size/anti-diet movement. In September of 2022, after 6 years at a group practice, I excitedly launched my own practice. I currently work out of Walnut Creek, California, serving clients all over the state.
I find my clients to be some of the most creative, passionate, and caring individuals I have the pleasure of knowing. I view therapy as a vessel to bridge the gap to healing, and strive to empower my clients to identify their strengths, cultivate greater insight and awareness, and become the best, most content version of themselves.
*I provide trainings, offer clinical supervision, participate in speaking engagements, and write professional blog posts in addition to my clinical work.
Services I Provide
Individual, Couple & Family Therapy
(In-person and virtual sessions available)
-I primarily work with young adults navigating eating disorders, anxiety, major life transitions (college, new parenthood), and relationship difficulties.
-My approach integrates elements of psychodynamic/relational therapy along with practical skills and tools to help you cope more effectively and tackle unwanted behaviors.
-Sessions are 50 minutes, and typically start off weekly (for more on this, see my FAQ page).
-Many of my clients operate from a Christian worldview. I'm happy to integrate faith into our work as desired.
-Sometimes, incorporating your family or partner into the process is an important piece of the puzzle which I am glad to explore with you.
Collaborative Care
I believe mental health is the culmination of biological, psychological, and social/environmental factors. Eating disorders in particular can carry significant health risks. As such, I consider it essential to collaborate with my clients' physicians, dietitians, and psychiatrists on an on-going basis to stay up-to-date with your most relevant recovery needs [Referrals available if needed].
About Therapy
My Approach
The biggest indicator of success in therapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. With this in mind, I seek to offer my clients a warm, collaborative environment and cater my treatment approach to your unique personality, goals, and strengths, though a trauma-informed lens. If/how faith is incorporated into the conversation is up to you. It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the client and caretaker alike. But in the end, making small changes to self-defeating behavior and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering results.
*I am trauma-focused CBT certified and Restoration Therapy Level I and II certified.
